SMASH! Karaoke Rules
General Conduct
Please follow SMASH!’s code of conduct at all times. Showmanship is encouraged but please keep all dance routines and stage performances at a PG rating. This includes profanity in lyrics. Due to time constraints, the use of any instruments will not be permitted: the Karaoke competition is strictly vocal-only.
Eligibility
Please be aware that competitors cannot win more than one event. If you are entering both competitions, you will only proceed to one of the finals. Similarly if your duet partner is entering both events, this will also affect your eligibility for the finals.
Sign-up
Submissions will be taken online and on the day (space permitting). A confirmation of your entry and the time slot allocated to your heat will be emailed to your registered email. A list of the order of contestants who will be performing in the heats will be presented prior to the Convention and also will be available on the day. Event times for competition heats are to be advised. Please make yourselves available at the Karaoke room 15 minutes prior to your allocated time as to not miss out on your chance to go into the finals. If you miss your allocated time, you will be rescheduled to the end of the respective competition sessions otherwise you will be forfeited.
Song Choice
• Where not already provided in our karaoke Database, you must provide us the instrumental tracks to the songs that you want to sing. We try to keep our database as accurate as possible, but we advise you to bring a backup of your songs just in case. Additionally you may want to provide your own song file to guarantee it is the version you are familiar with.
• Only Anime, Videogame and Japanese songs will be accepted for the Finals.
• Songs must be in the Japanese language; if a song has mostly English lyrics, it must be from an Anime or videogame (for example, Rie Fu’s “Life is like a boat” from Bleach, the FFXII ending by Angela Aki, Cowboy Bebop songs, etc…). Japanese songs with some verses in English (such as the chorus) are acceptable.
• Two people may not sing the same song for heats or finals. We ask you to provide a secondary song in the event your song of choice has been taken already.
• In the case where a specific song is very popular and we have many contestants wanting to sing it, song allocation will be on a first come first serve basis. Contestants may be asked to provide additional songs if necessary.
• All songs are limited to a maximum running time of 5 minutes. Please feel free to provide an edited instrumental that will be under this time limit if your song is too long.
Use of Lyrics
Please note that while singing with lyrics (ie. Reading from the Karaoke machine, or holding a sheet of paper with lyrics on it) will be accepted in the heats, a judging penalty will be applied. No sheet lyrics are allowed in the finals.
Finals
Finals will be held on the Main Stage after all heats have been concluded (exact time to be advised). You will be notified if you will be participating in the finals shortly after the heats have finished. Further instructions will be given to you when we call you on the day using the contact number that you have registered with. Please note you must be available at 4:30pm to be considered for final main stage performance.
Judging
Contestants will be judged by a number out of 10. These points are made up of the following subsections. 6 points for vocal, 2 points for showmanship and 2 points for difficulty.
