Art Competition Terms and Conditions
SMASH may alter these rules at any time, but we’ll attempt to let you know about any major changes beforehand.
- Please note that you need to have created the entirety of your entry yourself in order to be eligible to win an award. Collaborations may be entered for display, but will not be eligible to win.
- Artists can enter as many categories as they like, but they are only eligible to win one art prize; that is to say, an artist cannot win in more than one category.
- Staff and Volunteers can enter their works in any competition for display purposes, but they need to clearly identify themselves as a Staff Member or as a Volunteer in their registration form, and are ineligible to win any prizes.
- Remember that SMASH! is a PG event, so anything that is going to be put on display must fall under that level of content. You should stay away from pornographic, sexually explicit or suggestive material, sexually-orientated violence (characters in duress or depictions of sadism/masochism), full-frontal or tasteless nudity, and extreme violence or gore.
- All entries must be original entries created specifically for entry into the SMASH! 2011 Art Competitions. Please don’t plagiarise or copy from existing sources. You can submit fan-art or fan-inspired artworks, so long as they’re not direct traces or copied directly from elsewhere.
- You may submit sequential artworks (comics) for the Themed competition only.
- When completing your registration, you will be asked to provide personal details, such as your name and your contact information. This information will only be used by the SMASH! Art Competition staff in the event that we need to contact you. For more information, please refer to our Privacy Policy on the SMASH! website.
- Our panel of judges is typically comprised of our International Guest Artists and the Art Event Director. Don’t try and bribe them.
- Who’s running the competition? Volunteers! We’re here to make the competition fun and fair for everybody, so feel free to ask us any questions you have. Abusive language or behaviour, however, will not be tolerated. If you have any problems or complaints on the day, please consult one of the Art Directors.
- Got any problems or queries about the rules? Please address them to the Art Events coordinator as soon as possible, preferably at least a week prior to the convention, so that we can take the time to reply and make changes if necessary. Use a suitable heading (I.e. “Art Competition Questions”) so that we don’t miss your email!
- You can contact the Art Events coordinator at patrick.lum@smash.org.au. Any concerns about mismanagement, unfairness, corruption, cheating or other issues that involve the staff, judges or participants of the SMASH! Art Competition are to be addressed to the Events Manager at events@smash.org.au.
Artwork Collection
You need to be present yourself at the end of the day to the art competition registration desk where we will gladly return your artwork to you. In the event that you are unable to do that, we request you let us know at the time of registration about the best way for us to return the work, if you want us to do so. Otherwise, at the end of the event the work will either be scavenged by our staff or the cleaners. We totally advise you to come pick your art up.
In the unlikely event you can’t be present to pick your artwork up, your chances of having it sent back undamaged and unharmed will be greatly increased if you choose to give us a self-addressed envelope or postal tube when you come to hand in your piece. Just remember to indicate which artwork it is on the envelope or tube.
