SMASH! are proud to present the details for our 2008 Art Competitions!
Do you have BURNING CREATIVE PASSION? ...Or just like drawing? Then the SMASH! Art Competitions are for you! From watercolours and inks to digital artworks and comics, bring your artworks along to SMASH! for the opportunity to enter one of our many competitions. Not only will you get that warm and fuzzy feeling inside when you see your artwork displayed in our very own Art Gallery, but you also go in the running for a host of great prizes. So you better get your pens and PC's together; times a wasting, and we'd love to see what our talented attendees have to offer~
SEE INFO BELOW on how to submit your artworks
SMASH! will be running two age categories for all of its competitions to help shine the limelight on budding young artists and veterans alike
. The two categories are for entrants
17 years and younger
(ie, persons who
have not yet turned 18 by December 31 2008
), and persons aged
18 and over
. There will be prizes for the respective winners of each Art Competition age category
DIGITAL ART COMPETITION
Accepts entries that are...
created entirely, or with the aid of, computer graphics programs such as Photoshop, Painter, Open Canvas and Illustrator, as well as 3D programs such as Maya. A piece that was sketched and inked on paper but coloured on the computer is still considered a Digital artwork, as would an image that is sketched on paper but inked on the computer.
Theme:
Using the following words as inspiration, include one or more as a visual element of your image.
Prince
Mushroom
Robot
Prizes:
18 over =
Wacom Intuos 3 6" x 8"
17 under =
Wacom Intuos 3 6" x 8"
Sponsored by
WACOM
TRADITIONAL ART COMPETITION
Accepts entries that are...
created with traditional media such as Tria and Copic markers, watercolours, acrylics, gauche, inks and screentones. You can use any combination of traditional media, but the piece as a whole must be created by traditional means. Typically this means sketching, inking and/or colouring without the aid of computer programs. You are allowed to enter a raw scanned/printed copy of your traditional artwork, as long as you show us the original for verification.
Theme:
Using the following words as inspiration, include one or more as a visual element of your image.
Prince
Mushroom
Robot
Prizes:
18 over =
Wacom Intuos 3 6" x 8"
17 under =
Wacom Bamboo 6" x 9"
Sponsored by
WACOM
COMIC COMPETITION
Accepts entries that are...
created in the style of a sequential comic, using panels and layouts of images. They do not have to contain dialogue. For the SMASH! 2008 comic competition, entries will be limited to B5/A4 in size, no more than one page. How you choose to lay out your comic on this page is entirely up to you, as long as the comic contains
two or more panels
. For example, you might choose to do a 4-koma comic, or fill the entire page; it's up to you.
Theme:
Legends, adventure and discovery
Prizes:
18 over =
Wacom Intuos 3 6" x 8"
17 under =
Wacom Bamboo 6" x 9"
Sponsored by
WACOM
DOODLING COMPETITION
Unlike all the other Art Competition categories where you can prepare your work beforehand, the Doodle competition is a test of time and creativity! The Doodle comp challenges your skill to produce an artwork in a limited timeframe; SMASH! will only accept entries that have been drawn on the day. This is an
unthemed
category, so let your imagination run wild.
Competition entry will be opened on the day. Entries will be closed at 3pm for judging.
Prizes:
18 over =
Wacom Bamboo 6" x 9"
17 under =
Wacom Bamboo 6" x 9"

WACOM
DOLLFIE PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
-
Accepts entries that are…
printed photographs taken by you of Asian Ball-Joint Dolls which you personally own. You may enhance your photographs with digital editing programs, but remember that this is a competition for photography, not photomanipulation. SMASH! will be holding two categories for this event, they include:
Portrait
- Photographs where the face and expression is the main focus of the image. Portraits are primarily upper body shots.
Abstract
- Photographs which focus on areas other than the face, or where the doll is but one element in an overall picture. Abstracts may include a doll’s face, but this should not be the main focus of the image.
ART COMPETITION RULES
SMASH! and you
By submitting your art to SMASH! you agree to give SMASH! permission to obtain a digital photograph of your work, and that these images may be used for future promotional material. You will be notified if this is the case.
Winning entrants will have their name (or nickname) and image displayed on the SMASH! website as part of the Art Competition archive
THEMES
All themes are open to interpretation, but it must not be so obscure that the judges cannot reasonably identify the original theme. Judges will also take in to consideration your creative approach to the themes.
DIGITAL ART COMPETITION
Using the following words as inspiration, include one or more as a visual element of your image.
Prince
Mushroom
Robot
TRADITIONAL MEDIA COMPETITION
Using the following words as inspiration, include one or more as a visual element of your image.
Prince
Mushroom
Robot
COMIC COMPETITION
Legends, adventure and discovery
DOODLING COMPETITION
Unthemed. You may draw anything you like so long as it falls under the content rules.
Content
For artworks entered into a themed category, you may interpret the theme in any way you wish, but it must not be so obscure that the judges cannot reasonably identify the original theme.
Fanart and fan-inspired artworks are allowed. Works submitted must not be plagiarized or copied from existing sources.
Artworks submitted must not have been in previous commercial use (EG: Commissioned and commercial illustrations, or artworks already submitted to other art competitions).
Submitting anything that falls under the restricted content rules will be immediately refused and withdrawn from the art competition. If you are unsure of whether your artwork is suitable, please don't hesitate to contact the Art staff for clarification. As a general rule, SMASH! is a PG event, and affectionate poses and kissing are allowed (within reason). Restricted content is as follows:
o Pornographic, sexually explicit or suggestive material.
o Sexually orientated violence (Such as characters appearing ‘forced’, in duress, or depictions of sadism/masochism)
o Frontal and tasteless nudity
o Extreme violence or gore
Submitting and collecting
By submitting your art to the SMASH! art competitions, you agree to have read and understood the terms and conditions, and that the information you have provided as part of your submission form is correct. Failure to comply with the Terms and Conditions may result in your disqualification from this and future events
Artworks will only be accepted at the convention between 10AM and 3PM at the
art competition registration table
(located in the Art Room upstairs) and must be collected by the close of the convention, otherwise your artwork will be retained by SMASH!
You may enter as many categories as you like, and you may submit more than one entry per category. However, entrants are only eligible to win one art competition prize. That is to say, one artist cannot win in more than one category.
All artists entering the competition must submit their artwork with a completed application form. These will be made available before to the convention and can be filled in prior to the event; spare forms will also be available on the day.
When submitting artwork, please be aware that we cannot guarantee it will be completely secure for the duration of the convention. Therefore we advise you bring a copy rather than the original piece, especially for entries to the Traditional Artwork category.
Art pieces that are A4 in size should be presented in a plastic sleeve. If you are unable to supply a sleeve, staff will have several spares available, but we advise you to please bring your own; this is for the protection of your artwork. For any artworks larger than A4, it is the artists responsibility to ensure it has adequate protection. We will not be held in account for any damages, but we will make sure to handle all artworks with care.
All art pieces must have your name and mobile number on the back. At the end of the day when collecting your art piece you will be asked to repeat your details; this is just an identification precaution to ensure that artworks are returned to their correct owners.
All contact details and personal details will stay private, and no members of the public or third parties will receive this information.
Please be aware that if you plan on volunteering for SMASH!, all committee members and volunteers are ineligible to claim or be judged for any Art Competition or other event prizes
Please be aware that the above rules may be subject to change
Please Post all questions and comments on the Art Competitions here
Good luck~

I'm pretty sure it's fine to put "fan characters" if fan art is allowed.

Hmm... as a volunteer, under our rules you cannot enter competitions ... (or... perhaps you can, but you won't be judged so you can't win a prize - I think it was last year's rules - not sure about this year's.) ;orz
So... if you have applied to be a volunteer but you really want to enter our art competitions then perhaps send an email to the Volunteer squad to withdraw your application as a volunteer and state your reason as 'because you want to enter the art comps.' As I said, also consider whether you think you'll have time to make art to enter these competitions. X3 If you think you'd be too busy then... might as well volunteer instead, eh? At least you get to still be a part of all the fun. =)

The winners will most likely be announced later in the evening during SMASH! like last year via the main stage.
Go up there when your name is called, drop-up a sexy pose for the cameras, collect your artwork and prize; or write down details if your prize is to be mailed to you.
I think that's how it goes.
I forgot the sexy pose last year. :C
