SMASH! 2008 Fanfiction Competition

Ever wondered what happened if the Sailor Scouts, boarded a pirate ship for some jolly good fun? Can you really trap a Super Saiyan using only bananas? What will be the results of a defamation case; Renge from Ouran High Vs Sasuke and Naruto, with your favourite OBJECTION! lawyers to be on the job!? What if Haruhi isn't really a god, it's actually Kyon, and Certain People are trying to stop him from really finding out by making Haruhi the decoy?

SMASH! is having a fanfiction competition - where you can answer all these questions and more; with entries from Australia and New Zealand eligible to enter!

Our judges are a secret - shhhhhhhhh - but they are fanfic writers just like you, chosen for their skills and broad fandom knowledge!

So take a look at our fandom list - we guarantee that you'll know at least one; and use one of our six prompts as broadly as you like:
  • First breath after a coma...
  • There's something I've been meaning to tell you...
  • The zombies weren't the problem...
  • In the name of the _____, I will punish you!
  • I had no intention of deceiving anyone. It's just that none of you understood…my true self.
  • Mission complete.

We have three categories eligible for prizes,
  • Romance/Drama
  • Comedy/Parody
  • Action/Adventure

We want you to keep it PG, but there are no restrictions on pairings!
The deadline for entries is midnight (AEST), July 15th 2008.
So now that you know the details, go write!

Entry Guidelines

1. The maximum rating for any entry is PG, as defined in the guidelines set by the OFLC

2. Closing deadline for entries is midnight (AEST) on July 15th 2008.

3. Categories for submission are:
  • Romance/Drama
  • Comedy/Parody
  • Action/Adventure

In the event that a category does not have enough submissions, that category will be removed.

4. There are 6 prompts; writers are encouraged to interpret and incorporate the theme as they like.
  • First breath after a coma...
  • There's something I've been meaning to tell you...
  • The zombies weren't the problem...
  • In the name of the _____, I will punish you!
  • I had no intention of deceiving anyone. It's just that none of you understood…my true self.
  • Mission complete.

5. As there are a very large number of anime/manga/game series, it is not possible for the judges to read for all. Please check the series list for series that are being accepted into the competition.

6. You can submit up to three separate entries; to multiple categories, if applicable. You will need to fill out a submission form for each entry. If an entry is a collaboration by two or more authors, it will be considered as one entry for each author.

7. The recommended word length is 1000-2000 words.

8. All eligible entries will be displayed on site. If you would prefer for your entry not to be displayed, please add a note when sending in your submission.

Eligibility Guidelines

1. Entries accepted from Australia and New Zealand only.

2. Entries from the SMASH! Committee 2008 and it's current volunteers will be accepted but not eligible for any prizes or awards. They will merely be displayed and critiqued.

3. A disclaimer will be required declaring intellectual property rights to the original creator.

Format: (.txt .rtf .doc)

Please use the following submission form when sending in entries.

(I'm sorry, but my brain farted when I paired Katamari to a 'Drama/romance' related fanfic)

okay... it says G or PG for the rating... What kind of sexual reference or violence can be expressed in a PG rated fanfic? Like I've seen lots of PG-rated things that weren't suitable for children. I just wanted to make sure how much of what I want to write can be added to it. Like can I write a shounen-ai fanfic where the characters might kiss... can that be considered as PG? I know no excessive violence will be allowed, but I just wanted to make sure because the ratings don't make it any clearer for me.

Yeah, the classifications can be a little confusing at times.

G to PG essentially is very mild to mild content.

Quote
G - GENERAL

The impact of the classifiable elements for material classified G should be very mild only.

Classifiable elements

THEMES
The treatment of themes should have a very low sense of threat or menace, and be justified by context.

VIOLENCE
Violence should have only a low sense of threat or menace, and be justified by context.
Sexual violence is not permitted.

SEX
Sexual activity should be very mild and very discreetly implied, and be justified by context.

LANGUAGE
Coarse language should be very mild and infrequent, and be justified by context.

DRUG USE
Drug use should be implied only very discreetly, and be justified by context.

NUDITY
Nudity should be justified by context.

Quote
PG - PARENTAL GUIDANCE

The impact of the classifiable elements for material classified PG should be no higher than mild.

A lot of these themes are really dependent on the context of your story.
Mostly just use your common sense.
Any of these above elements can be written into your story, however there should be no excessive or overly graphic details.
If you have further questions, please ask.

I know the recommended word count is 1000-2000.... but what is the maximum to how much we can write? Cuz even though it's recommended to write that much, I might go too far.... so I need a final line to say I cannot pass that...

We don't want to inhibit your creativity in anyway, so if you feel that you'd like to write something longer than what is recommended, feel free to do so. That being said, I would think something lengthier than 3500 words would perhaps be far too long.

So I would consider 3000-3500 words a maximum.
