Woo. We have a long update today but there's a lot of information that we want to cover, with some exciting new things coming up! So big in fact we need to split it into TWO newsletters. Sorry about the space in your inboxes - the second one will come out tomorrow.

Apology - Pricing Change

SMASH! regrets to inform that we're changing the price for SMASH! 2008, due to administrative and content reasons. However have no fear, all funds SMASH! raise go directly back into SMASH!, it's just that we've recently been given some really amazing opportunities for improvement of our events and the introduction of some interesting new ones. We're incredibly sorry for any incorrect information given out previously, which we're doing our best to rectify.

The price differences for SMASH! 2008 are:

Pre-registration: $9 -> $10
Door Entry: $12 -> $15

Sorry for the inconvenience, but we're definitely hoping that you'll enjoy the new things we have in store this year - we'll be releasing lots more information about our events as we get closer to the day, August 2nd 2008.

Pre-registration for SMASH! 2008 will open on May 1st; stay tuned for updates!

Special Guest Announcement

Meet international artist Kidchan at SMASH! 2008

SMASH! is honoured to have an international artist with us in 2008! Kidchan specialises in digital illustration and has been featured in magazines and exhibited in her native Malaysia. Along with presenting digital workshops, Kidchan will also be selling her personal artbook Muted Colours, and displaying a collection of her original artworks.

Competitions!

Competitions make up one of the fun things about SMASH! And give you a chance to be a part by presenting your skills. We have a broad range of competitions, so why not show off your talent, and maybe even take home a prize. :D
This is a brief overview of some of the competitions that you can get started on right now!

Animavericks AMV Competition

Deadline: Midnight, 25th July 2008 (AEST)

Want to put your editing skills to the test? Get out your favourite editor and show us what you have for the Animavericks AMV Competition!

SMASH! Fanfiction Competition

Deadline: Midnight, July 1st 2008 (AEST)

Ever wondered what happened if the Sailor Scouts, boarded a pirate ship for some jolly good fun? Can you really trap a Super Saiyan using only bananas?
SMASH! is having a fanfiction competition - where you can answer all these questions and more; with entries from Australia and New Zealand eligible to enter!

Art Competition Details

And of course it wouldn't be SMASH! without our art competitions!

Digital Art Competition

Deadline: 10 AM - 3 PM August 2 2008 (AEST)

Accepts entries that are created entirely, or with the aid of, computer graphics programs such as Photoshop, Painter, Open Canvas and Illustrator, as well as 3D programs such as Maya.

Comic Competition

Deadline: 10 AM - 3 PM August 2 2008 (AEST)

Accepts entries that are... created in the style of a sequential comic, using panels and layouts of images. They do not have to contain dialogue.

Traditional Art Competition

Deadline: 10 AM - 3 PM August 2 2008 (AEST)

Accepts entries that are... created with traditional media such as Tria and Copic markers, watercolours, acrylics, gauche, inks and screentones. You can use any combination of traditional media, but the piece as a whole must be created by traditional means.

Doodling Competition

Deadline: 10 AM - 3 PM August 2 2008 (AEST)

Unlike all the other Art Competition categories where you can prepare your work beforehand, the Doodle competition is a test of time and creativity! The Doodle comp challenges your skill to produce an artwork in a limited timeframe; SMASH! will only accept entries that have been drawn on the day. This is an unthemed category, so let your imagination run wild.

SMASH! is proud to introduce a whole new art competition for 2008!

Character Design Competition

Deadline: Midnight on 30th June 2008 (AEST)

Flex your creative muscle in a variety of different mediums for the SMASH! Character Design Competition!

Our Mascots, twins Skadi and Cyrus have been gone from their planet for a while. The King of Cosmos is beginning to worry about the state of their mission, so he has sent one of his trusted subjects to find Skadi and Cyrus and see how they are progressing with their quest to spread the culture of the Ota Kuu galaxy.

Your mission:

Design a character who will go in search of Skadi and Cyrus as they travel throughout Earth. Male, female, alien, robot, food... the interpretation is up to you!
