SMASH! Recommends: Monster

Dr. Kenzo Tenma had it all; a comfortable life in Germany, engaged to the hospital director's daughter, a promising career as head of neurosurgery. But all of that changed one night when, fed up with internal hospital politics, he makes a gut moral decision. Save the life of a young boy, Johan, instead of a more 'important' patient who came in afterwards. All lives are equal, aren't they? The decision cripples his career, until a series of bizarre events give him a second chance.

However, nine years later Tenma will discover the horrible ramifications of his decision to save that young boy. Because there is something deeply disturbing about Johan; something much more terrifying than a cold blooded killer. "I brought that monster back to life". With this knowledge, Tenma sets out to unravel the mystery behind Johan and his twin sister.

Winner of the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Award, Shogakukan Manga Award and Japan Media Arts Excellence Prize, Naoki Urasawa's Monster is a deep and richly interwoven psychological thriller. Urasawa is dubbed the 'Master of Suspense' for good reason, because around his gripping story he has also constructed a compelling array of characters with believable emotions and motivations. No character is ever background fodder, as Urasawa weaves in and out between them to create a story which is more than just one man's pursuit of truth. It's an exploration human nature, both terrifying and uplifting. After all, all life is equal, isn't it?

Monster is currently being published by Viz under their Signature line. If you enjoy Urasawa's work, also be on the lookout for 20th Century Boys, due to be published after the last volume of Monster.
