Fun StuffDeath NoteDeath Note is a fascinating philosophical look at power and the corruption and madness it spreads. Light is the all round perfect student - incredibly intelligent - he's expected to graduate top of his year, physically fit, fairly good looking with social skills to match. The only problem is - things come too easy to Light, his world has become fairly boring. This all changes with the event of the Death Note. Now with the power to kill any person that he can place both a name and face to, his life will never be boring again. If you had the power of life and death, what would you do? Would this change you? If you have the power does that give you the right? All of these concepts and more are explored as Light decides to create a perfect world, a Utopia free from criminal influence and goes up against those who would like to stop him. The legendary sugar-loving detective L, is one of those individuals who would like to stop Light and in the process seems quite content to drive Light crazy. The banter that goes back and forth between these two adds significantly to the dialogue, and is considered one of the strengths of this series. Death Note's primary complaint occurs around the middle of the series, where the tone takes a distinct change, however this reviewer still found it a fascinating series to read and, though the philosophical points can be handled quite heavily on occasion, it always is thought provoking. Death Note is a intriguing story, and the art is distinctive, clean and striking, well suited to the concepts it's covering. Copyright © 2008 SMASH! (Sydney Manga and Anime Show) |
