With you at the helm, let's take on a vocal journey through time. Be it exploring forests with songs from Totoro or immersed in the 80s vibes with city pop. Whichever it is, let’s share your nostalgia by picking up the mics and singing!

Competition Format

The SMASH! 2024 Karaoke Competition will be split into three stages.

  • Preliminary Round
    • This round will be held pre-convention (online), before SMASH! weekend.
    • There will be 10 semi-finalists who will be chosen by our esteemed guest judges based on their online submission.
  • Semi-Finals
    • Semi-finalists will receive a free weekend-pass and will perform on stage at SMASH! on the 20th of July. Those under 13 will also be supplied an additional weekend-pass for their accompanying guardian. Please see the included FAQ below for more details.
  • Finals
    • Five finalists will then be selected to perform on stage at SMASH! on the 21st of July.

How to Participate

  • Create and record a new video of yourself singing one song which is nostalgic to you.
  • The piece must conform to the maximum duration of 6 minutes. Songs over this time limit will be cut at 6 minutes.
  • You must provide a short written explanation of why the song is nostalgic to you. If no explanation is provided, the submission will not be considered.

Who Can Apply?

  • This competition is for everyone of all ages.
    • Those under 13 will also be supplied an additional weekend-pass for their accompanying guardian. Please see the included FAQ below for more details.
  • Each applicant may only submit one entry.
  • SMASH! Staff and Crew are allowed to enter their works in any SMASH!’s competitions; however, under no circumstances will special consideration be given to any entrant during the judging and selection process.

General Rules

  • All songs must be PG13, more details listed below.
  • All semi-finalists and finalists selected in the preliminary rounds must be ready to sing for both days of the SMASH! Convention.
  • The video footage must be unedited and done in one take without:
    • Cuts
    • Guide Vocals
    • Lip syncing
    • Autotune
  • Submissions CANNOT be AI GENERATED OR ASSISTED.
  • The song must be associated with Japanese culture/subculture.
  • You can change your off vocal/instrumental to a different key but, you cannot record the whole performance and post-edit the vocals to be a different key.
  • The submission must be an MP4 encoded file. Audio recordings alone will not be accepted.
  • The video footage must be newly recorded for this competition and has not been made public anywhere else.
  • Submissions must include a short written explanation on why the song is relevant to the theme, Nostalgia.
  • Upon winning the preliminary stages, winners will be given the chance to sing for the semifinals and the finals.
    • Semi-finalists must sing a different song to their preliminary song.
    • Finalists can sing ANY song, which includes their preliminary song.
    • All winners must provide an instrumental mp3 backing track to their songs for the semifinals and finals.
      • (Details will be provided if you have been selected to move onto the next stage)

When entering the SMASH! Karaoke Competition, please understand it will be viewed by a large and diverse audience of all ages with different nationalities, cultures and religions. Please ensure your submission adheres to the following conditions:

  • Entries must not be discriminatory against mental, physical, or economical disadvantages.
  • Depictions of child prostitution, nudity, erotic content, or abuse are strictly prohibited.
  • Entries must not contain socially offensive content, ie. must not disrespect anyone's freedom of religion, beliefs, occupation, etc.
  • The entry must not depict any form of drugs or alcohol.
  • Entries must fit the contest purpose.

Please do not submit or monetise works that you have submitted to other contests that are occurring simultaneously. However, entrants are free to submit to other competitions after the announcement of our results.

Once an entry has been submitted, no further changes can be made to said entry. Should there be more than one submission from one entrant, we will only consider the first submission.

Submission Details

All entries must be uploaded via the submission form.

  • Please ensure that your video footage has been recorded clearly.
  • Preferred submissions formats are through a link via YouTube (unlisted) or Google Drive as an mp4.
    • Please name the file with your ‘Full_Name_SongTitle’ if the submission is through Google Drive.
